Run-off necessary for SLC election

In the on-cam pus S tudent Life Council (SLC) election , no c a n ­ d id a te r e c e iv e d a m a jo r i ty , th e r e b y fo rc in g a ru n -o ff on T hursday . John Salveson and Mike R ich ter will face each o ther in th e South Q uad vote w hile J im Spurting and E d Van T asse l a re fina lists in the north quad . The off-cam pus SLC elections w ere inva lida ted yeste rd ay due to im proper voting p rocedures a t C am pus View. C andidates John Lynch and P hil M ancini ag reed to hold the election again on T h u rs­ day. "W e had a ballo t box a t C am pus View and thevo lun teer w orking the box left the ballo ting a re a to push for OC votes, leav ing the box u n g u a r d e d ,” e x p la in e d SLC E lection C ha irm an P e te Gottsack e r. T here w ere 120 valid votes but because of the nu m b er of in­ valid votes p re sen t, the OC election w as in va lida ted , G o ttsacker a d ­ ded. On T h u rsd ay , the OC ballot boxes will be in the lib ra ry and H uddle, continued G ottsacker. In o rd e r th a t m ore OC studen ts m ay vote, the voting tim es have been lengthened from 6:00 p .m . to 10:45 p .m ., he added. To p reven t fu r th e r e lection p rob lem s, the OC election is being held on cam pus, he added. “The cam pa ign ing coverage on the N orth and South Q uads w as good bu t th e tu rnou ts a t the forum s w ere qu ite d isappo in ting ," B yrne com m ented . Action on the N orth Quad saw Spurling accu m u la tin g 508 votes for 49 per cen t, com pared to Van T asse l’s 280 vo tes for 27 per cent. S p u r lin g m is s e d w in n in g th e elec ton o u trig h t by eleven votes. Spurling easily c a rr ie d Zahm as well a s w inning in G race , F arley , and B reen-Phillips. Van T assel d is p la y e d s tren g th in K een an w here he accu m u la ted 90 votes. The overa ll voting in th e North Q uad w as good w ith 1036 votes tallied . On th e South Q uad, Salveson s c la im ed seven halls w ith 38 per cen t of th e vote, com pared to R ic h te r’s 33 p e r cen t. Salveson ca rr ie d A lum ni by a landslide of 114 to 20. He also won in C a v a n a u g h , D illo n , F is h e r , M o r r is s e y , a n d P a n g b o rn . R ic h te r’s b es t show ing w as in Sorin w ith 71 votes, bu t he also c a rr ie d St. E d ’s, Lyons, Lewis, H ow ard and Holy C ross. W alsh w as d iv ided betw een the two c a n d id a te s w ith 38 votes tabu la ted for e a c h .
